SELF-DRIVING CAR PULLED OVER FOR GOING TOO SLOW
A Google self-driving car was pulled over Thursday for driving too slow near its headquarters in Mountain View, California. An officer observed regular traffic slowing down, and discovered the self-driving car – with no driver – at the head of the line. The police wrote in a statement that the car was traveling 24 mph in a 35 mph zone. Google, for its part, says that the company has capped its prototype vehicles at 25 mph.
* But they’ll be happy to up it to 75 if that’s what we really want.
* 25 mph? I can walk faster than that.
* The tough part is going to be getting the car into Traffic Court.
* I’m just glad the car responded to being pulled over.
* I’ve seen “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Sure, they respond to our commands … at first.
* Then later it’s, “Hal, pull the car over, Hal. You’re not following my instructions.”
* Typical. It seems like just yesterday I was reading about the idea for these cars and thinking, “Well, that’ll never happen.”
