GIRL KICKED OFF CHEERLEADING SQUAD FOR HAVING CURLY HAIR

An 11-year-old girl was kicked off a cheerleading squad for having curly hair. Makayla Fallaw was allegedly told she could not compete with her cheerleading team at Woodlands Elite Cheer Squad, a Houston, Texas cheerleader school, because she refused to straighten her hair. Makayla has been doing gymnastics and cheering since she was 4, but she still struggles with straightening her naturally curly hair. The coach allegedly demanded she straighten her hair for an upcoming competition to look like every other teammate. The squad’s coach, Kevin Tonner, said that the facility was willing to negotiate with the mother to keep the girl on the squad, but neither side could compromise with a solution. Tonner told KTRK that the mother was “very defensive.”
* Gimme a “J”! Gimme an “ERK” (or: Gimme a “D”! Gimme an “ICK”).
* So now everyone gets lawyered up and we go for it.
* Wait – nobody noticed she had curly hair when she applied?
* If this was a movie, when the cheerleading squad ran out onto the field, they would all have just secretly shaved their heads moments before in solidarity.
* Then the coach, played by Larry Miller, would have a conniption.
* And the team would win first place.
* Wouldn’t it be easier for all the other girls to use curlers?
* Going after someone for their appearance? I haven’t spent a day in law school but I could win this case.
* How did this guy Kevin ever rise to the level of cheerleading coach with this kind of attitude?
* You know what’s also a little twisted? That she’s been cheerleading since she was 4.
* I think she’s got THEM by the curly hairs.
* PHONE TOPIC: Bearing in mind that this is a private squad, not a school – is this right?
