16-YEAR-OLD CHEF OPENING NYC RESTAURANT
Flynn McGarry is a 16-year-old wunderkind chef who is opening his own restaurant in New York City this Saturday. McGarry appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine when he was 15. The restaurant is called Eureka. Three days a week, McGarry will prepare a 14-course tasting menu for his 12-seat counter restaurant; it’s located on a West Village corner that’s part of a catering company. McGarry’s menu will include:
– Peanut Ritz crackers with foie gras terrine and sour cherry compote. “I make the ridges on each cracker with a toothpick.”
– He’ll also serve sea-water-brined sea urchin with carrot cremeaux and coffee-pickled carrots.
Dinners at McGarry’s restaurant are $160, including tax and tip.
* Twenty bucks off if you do his homework for him.
* 16 years old and he runs a restaurant. My kid just got through the new Assassin’s Creed game in three and a half hours.
* One of his specialties: using ProActive as a dipping sauce.
* Ritz crackers with foie gras terrine and sour cherry compote. I recognize about three of those words.
* Get him to cater the prom.
* It’s a nice break from the young teenagers making millions on the stock market.
* For laughs ask him what he thinks of the school cafeteria’s food.
* It’s a long way from tuna casserole to sea urchins.
