AUDIO: PRESIDENT OBAMA TO VISIT SOUTH DAKOTA, COMPLETE BUCKET LIST
President Barack Obama will complete a rare presidential run though all 50 states when he delivers the commencement address at a South Dakota community college next month. South Dakota is the only state still waiting for Obama to visit. Obama will travel to Watertown, in the state’s northeastern corner, to deliver the commencement address at Lake Area Technical Institute on May 8. Lake Area Tech is one of the nation’s top community colleges, recognized for rigorously preparing its students and for having a two-year graduation rate that’s more than twice the national average. When he arrives in South Dakota, Obama will be just the fourth president to make a presidential run through all 50 of the United States. Richard Nixon was first, followed by George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
* Nixon was just looking for a friend. Clinton was trying to see if that Beach Boys song “California Girls” was true. (Well East Coast girls are hip… / Southern girls with the way they talk… / Midwest farmer’s daughters make you feel alright / Northern girls witht the way they kiss, they keep their boyfriends warm at night…)
* With any luck, we’ll have another 15-year gap before the next one.
* I’d like to take a moment and thank the media for not reporting Obama’s other 49 state visits. Just the thought of trying to come up with a New Hampshire joke makes my hands shake.
* South Dakotans, you have about two weeks to hide your money. Oh, you bet there’ll be fundraising.
* President Obama might as well visit South Dakota. It’s as close to Mt. Rushmore as he’ll ever get.
* Obama also needs that last souvenir spoon for his collection.
* Don’t know the Lake Area Technical Institute. I hear they’re very strong in snowmobile repair.
* Plus their ice fishing team is terrific this year.
* Nice to get this trip in before all eyes go back to the electoral college for the next 18 months.
* Sarah Palin doesn’t approve of the trip. She says, “This is no time for our President to be visiting a state in South America when we have so much to do at home.”
