THE $3 MILLION TUNA FISH – Jan 6
A massive 535-pound bluefin tuna sold for a record 510 million yen ($3.2 million) at the first auction of 2026 at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market. The top bidder for the prized tuna at the predawn auction on Monday was Kiyoshi Kimura, who runs the popular Sushi Zanmai chain. The fish was caught off the coast of northern Japan, a region widely regarded for producing some of the country’s finest tuna. Mr. Kimura said. “When I see a good-looking tuna, I cannot resist. I haven’t sampled it yet, but it’s got to be delicious.” The cost came out to 2.1 million yen per kilogram, or $6,060 per pound in American dollars.
* Yeah, but you can really stretch the dollars out by adding more mayonnaise to the sandwiches.
* $3.2 million could buy you a nice small apartment in New York. But yeah, fish is nice, too.
* He knows he’s got to eat it by Thursday, right, or it’ll go bad?
* And I thought the price of beef was getting nuts.
