TODAY IS …
(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR ACHIEVERS
The Target Study website says this:
“International Day for Achievers is observed every year on March 24th, to pay tribute to achievers in any field. These achievers can be Scientists, Doctors, Conservationists, Teachers, Social Workers etc. who have used their imagination and vision to ease or enhance the existence of humans.”
NATIONAL CHEESESTEAK DAY
The Days of the Year website says this:
“Cheesesteak sandwiches are almost a hundred years old, getting their start in 1930 in the city of Philadelphia. Pat Olivieri was a street hot dog vendor (at the base of the famous Italian Market in South Philadelphia) and he was just making his own lunch by slicing up some beef and throwing it on an Italian bun with some grilled onions. A regular patron stopped by and asked to have what Pat was eating, and then suggested that he start selling them. And they were a hit.” Pat founded the Pat’s King of Steaks restaurant which is still thriving at 9th & Wharton Streets.

AUDIO: MIKE MYERS FILMS “ALWAYS CANADA” MESSAGE
Given the current (51st) state of affairs between the U.S. and Canada, Canadians are rolling out a strong – well, strong for Canada – a strong campaign of messages meant to rally Canadians together in defense of being absorbed into the American Borg. Comedian Mike Myers just recorded a message with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the video, the Prime Minister is watching a hockey game. Mike Myers walks up, and Carney starts questioning Myers’ loyalty to Canada, being that he lives in the United States. Here’s the audio from that video. It’s pretty funny, and if you’re Canadian, it’s probably hysterical:

MY WORST COOKING MISTAKE
Reddit asked, “What’s the worst mistake you made while cooking?” Some of the responses:
– “My wife asked me to strain the soup broth. I put a colander in the sink and proceeded to pour the broth and bones though it, no bowl underneath.”
– “Opened a can of diced tomatoes and emptied them into the trash, left myself standing with the empty can thinking, what did I just do?”
– “I was naked cooking bacon, grease popped and burnt my junk.”
– “Just because corn on the cob, broccoli and hot dogs are all things that you can boil does not mean you should boil them all together.”
– “Left burner on after cooking. Didn’t know till the next morning. In 15 yrs it’s happened 3 times.”
– “Turned the wrong burner on and melted/set fire to a portable phone. Whole kitchen was covered in black crud.”
– “Put a lasagna casserole in the oven to bake for 45 minutes. Feeling tired, I decided to sleep for those 45 minutes. Six hours later…”
– “Accidentally grabbed powdered sugar instead of flour and proudly made the sweetest fried chicken known to mankind.”

INTERNATIONAL NEWSAUDIO: CRUISE SHIP ASKS PASSENGERS TO KEEP LIGHTS OFF AT NIGHT TO HIDE FROM PIRATES
The Cunard Line cruise ship Queen Anne is currently making its maiden around-the-world voyage. Last week, as the ship was traveling through the Celebes Sea between Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, the captain asked the 3,000 passengers to turn off their room lights and shut the curtains at night, so as not to attract pirates. The captain sent out the message, “This area is known for piracy threats. Therefore, we will be operating at a heightened level of security alertness during this period.”
* Yes, if we’re very quiet, maybe they won’t notice our 1,000-foot long, 13-deck cruise ship.
* A “heightened level of security alertness”? More like a heightened level of hiding and cowering.
* Oh my god, they want our all-you-can-eat buffet!
* Would it really be that hard to carry some shoulder-launched missiles?
* (see clip below) “Oh, now who blew the ship’s horn? Who did that? Report to the bridge immediately!!”

MAN PAINTS HIS DOG LIKE A TIGER TO SCARE OFF DEBT COLLECTORS
In Kasoa, Ghana, a man is in trouble for painting his dog to look like a tiger in an attempt to scare off bill collectors. Kofi Yakubu borrowed money from several micro finance companies over the last few years, but has refused to pay back the loans. Whenever collectors come to his house, they are met with the tiger dog – he’s orange with black stripes. Meanwhile, no one has been able to find Mr. Yakubu; he has gone into hiding.
* Maybe he painted himself to look like a cat, or a piece of furniture.
* Is Ghana, like, #1 in nearsightedness or something?
* “Don’t go debt collecting Kofi Yakubu’s house. He has a tiger that humps your leg.”
* MAYBE it COULD have worked if the dog wasn’t a Chihuahua.
* Jeeze, Ghanians, get it together. You can’t tell a dog from a tiger? They must have a lousy zoo over there. (A real Shih Tzu, as the old joke goes!)
WOMAN INJURED IN DOLPHIN SWIM
A Tennessee woman was hurt in a freak accident while swimming with dolphins in Jamaica. Cierra Stockard was swimming with the gentle sea creatures – the puppy dogs of the sea! – during spring break when one of the animals lifted her into the air — and she came down on the dolphin’s dorsal fin. She said, “It just felt like I got into a car accident. I was just in so much pain.” Stockard, who has sickle cell anemia, underwent emergency surgery and two blood transfusions. She is remaining in Jamaica with family and it is uncertain how and when she can go home.
* Flipper flipped’r.
* Jerks of the sea, more like.
* Especially when the other dolphins started making that laughing sound at her.
* She must have mistakenly signed up for dolphin wrestling, not dolphin swimming.
* Well, it’s a nice break from the shark attack stories. Or maybe not.
BRITISH MAN BURIED IN SNICKERS COFFIN
A British man received his dying wish to be buried in a Snickers coffin. Paul Broome often joked to friends about being buried in a Snickers coffin, and they were surprised when they found out he’d put this request in his will. They ordered a coffin that was designed to look like a partially unwrapped Snickers Bar. It even had the phrase “I’m nuts!” painted on the side.
* It was so realistic, when they put it in the ground, the cops arrested everyone for littering.
* And now he’s up in heaven, which is just left of the Milky Way.
* Ironically, the Snickers coffin cost 100 Grand.
* When everyone saw the coffin, there were a few Chuckles.
* Then the giant ants attacked.
