INDIAN HUSBAND STOLE AND SOLD WIFE’S KIDNEY FOR A DOWRY

A Bengal, India woman claims her husband stole her kidney to pay for a dowry her family couldn’t afford. Rita Sarkar, 28, says her hubby and his family harassed her regularly starting after their wedding in 2005, because her parents couldn’t pay the about $1,500 dowry they demanded. About two years ago, she began feeling terribly ill and her husband, Biswajit Sarkar, took her to a hospital. Before seeing the doctor, he took her to a relative’s house where she was given a soda that made her drowsy. She underwent surgery for what she was told was appendicitis. After the surgery, she knew something was awry when she began to suffer even more pain. A cousin took her to a hospital where doctors discovered she was missing a kidney. Her husband, his brother and their mother were arrested Monday after confessing that the kidney was sold to a businessman in a nearby city.
