(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)

* I’ll take Cushy Gigs for 1000, Ken? The Jeopardy answer is: These 25 actors will not have to look for work for the next nine years.
* It’s gonna take a lot of CGI to sculpt muscles onto all those dad bods.
* You may be wondering why Robert Downey Jr. is back, instead of letting another actor have a chance to cash in. Well, he now owns 51% of Marvel, so he voted himself into the movie.
* All I know is, my broker has me heavily invested in spandex production, so I should be set for life.
* Dr. Doom. That’s what I call my dentist.

SCOOBY-DOO COMING BACK YET AGAIN

Scooby-Doo, the franchise that would have been dead a long time ago if it weren’t for those meddling kids, is coming back yet again, this time as a The Netflix series. Netflix says it will be a “modern reimagining” of the show (’cause they don’t want to use the word ‘prequel’): “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic Velma and the strange but handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
* Back from the dead. Re-animated, as they say.
* “Modern reimagining” on streaming means they’ll be using the F-word a lot, instead of “Zoinks!”
* Without getting specific, let me just say I’m as excited to hear this as I am to hear there’s gonna be another “Avengers” movie.
* Y’know what? They can do any damn thing they want as long as they don’t bring back Scrappy-Doo.
* Looks like we got ourselves another mystery on our hands… of who’s gonna watch this thing? All the fans of the original are, y’ know, dead.

U.S. NEWS

SPACEX POLAR FLIGHT LAUNCHES MONDAY

The SpaceX Fram2 mission is set for launch this coming Monday, March 31. A four-person crew will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The four astronauts – none of which have been in space before – include a billionaire Bitcoin miner, a Norwegian cinematographer, an Australian polar adventurer, and a German robotics researcher. The four will spend three to five days circling – attempted for the first time – a polar orbit. They will be repeatedly passing over the north and south poles, instead of taking an east-west trajectory. (* It’ll be like the Globe of Death motorcycle act up there!) The crew will study a phenomenon known as STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), similar to the aurora borealis, known for its hazy purple and green streaks across the sky. The mission will also include an experiment that will attempt to grow mushrooms in space, man.
* Those are the words I’d like to hear as a non-astronaut: “attempted for the first time.”
* When they pass over the North Pole they can look for Santa, and when they pass over the South Pole, they can look for – uh, what’s at the South Pole? Anti-Santa?
* What a random mix of professions: Cinematographer, Robot Maker, Polar Adventurer and Bitcoin investor. It’s like Gilligan’s Island up there.
* If it were me, I’d like at least one of my crew to be a pilot.
* I guess it beats trying to visit the Titanic.
* “Dude, I see STEVE! Or is that just the mushrooms working?”

SHARKS MAKE NOISE, AND NOT JUST THE CRUNCHY SOUNDS

It was believed that sharks, despite the Hollywood movies where they roar as they jump out of the water, are silent killers. (* Except for the horrific screaming of the victims.) But now, a marine biologist named Carolin Nieder has noticed that some sharks make odd crackling noises. Nieder and colleagues experimented with handling juvenile rig sharks, native to the coastal waters of New Zealand, in tanks outfitted with sound recorders. As the sharks were touched, they produced high-frequency clicks. They believe the clicks are generated by the rig shark snapping its rows of teeth together. Why the shark produces these sounds is more of a mystery. It’s possible the sounds are meant to spook predators. They did notice that the sharks stopped producing the sounds once they got used to being handled.
* Maybe they’re chattering because the water’s cold.
* Bad dentures?
* Like every other juveniles, they do it for the clicks.
* You’re gonna need a bigger… microphone.
* All I know is, this stupid little factoid is good for at least two full days of shows on Discovery’s Shark Week.
