THE ODDEST MEDICAL STORIES OF 2024
Here is an assortment of some of the weirdest medical stories from this past year:
– The Most Vaccinated Man In The World: a German man claimed to have received over 200 Covid-19 vaccinations over the course of two years. Initially, he kept getting vaccinated to secure vaccination cards that could then be sold to others who didn’t want the shot. Researchers found no sign that the man was harmed in any way by his mass vaccinations, and even found some evidence that his immune system was better protected against the coronavirus than average.
– The Man Who Coughed His Guts Out: A 63-year-old Florida man had just had abdominal surgery for prostate cancer. Stopping for lunch at a diner, he had a coughing fit and ripped his stiches, and some of his guts popped out. Paramedics were able to safely get him to a hospital and he recovered with no issues.
– Human Hairball: In July, surgeons from Ecuador reported pulling out a two-pound hairball from a young woman’s stomach.
– The Threenis: In October, doctors in the UK reported a man with not one, not two, but three penises. The man did not even know about his unique anatomy; the extra genitalia were inside his body, and his external… uh, threenis, appeared and functioned normally.
– Margarita Burn: In December, doctors detailed a strange case of “margarita burn.” The man developed nasty rashes and blisters on his hands a day after he had manually juiced limes. The rash is caused by exposure to a class of chemicals commonly found in citrus, followed by exposure to ultraviolet light. The man was given a topical steroid cream and moisturizer to alleviate his symptoms, and his hands eventually returned to normal.
– Two Die After Using Bat Guano As Pot Fertilizer: Two men caught a fatal fungal infection from bat guano that they used as fertilizer for their homegrown cannabis. One man had bought the fertilizer online; the other had bats in his attic and used the droppings to fertilize his pot plants. They were exposed to Histoplasma fungus and caught a lung infection which spread to other parts of their bodies.
– Man’s Vision Turns Pink After Orgasms: Doctors in Mashhad, Iran, said 31-year-old married man began to have bizarre experiences after his orgasms. Soon after he climaxed, his vision dramatically changed, becoming sharper, brighter, and pinker. He said he had “high contrast vision with dominant pink color everywhere.” Doctors believe he was likely experiencing synesthesia, a condition where someone’s perception of the world is somehow routed through different or more senses than typical.
