COOK SOMETHING BOLD DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Cook Something Bold Day is designed to encourage us to cook something bold and daring, that will fill up the house with warm, ‘homey’ odors. It is celebrated in the month of November, as houses are closed up for the winter, and capture the cooking smells.”
DUNCE DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Dunce Day celebrates the the term ‘Dunce’ and dunce caps. Today marks the death (November 8, 1308) of medieval scholar Duns Scotus of Duns, Scotland. Perceptions of his views ranged from brilliant to less than complimentary. Duns Scotus believed that cone shaped hats increased learning potential. He believed knowledge would flow from the point of the cap, down and into the head of the wearer, making that person smarter. About all this accomplished over time was the perception of a person wearing a dunce cap to be … a dunce. There was a positive side to his use of dunce caps. It motivated the wearer to learn more, so he could be rid of the the cap. Scholar critics of his work derived the term ‘dunce’ from his name and place of birth.”
NATIONAL CAPPUCCINO DAY
NATIONAL HARVEY WALLBANGER DAY
The National Day Calendar website says this:
“National Harvey Wallbanger Day is observed annually on November 8th. A Harvey Wallbanger is made with 3 parts vodka, 1 part Galliano and 6 parts orange juice, poured into a highball glass and garnished with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.”
NATIONAL STEM DAY
WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY
The History website says this:
“On this day in 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923) became the first person to observe X-rays, a significant scientific advancement that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible visible. Rontgen’s discovery occurred accidentally in his lab in Wurzburg, Germany. He was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemically coated screen. He dubbed the rays that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown nature. Rontgen’s discovery was labeled a medical miracle and X-rays soon became an important diagnostic tool in medicine, allowing doctors to see inside the human body for the first time without surgery. In 1897, X-rays were first used on a military battlefield, during the Balkan War, to find bullets and broken bones inside patients.”

THE WEIRDEST THING A HOUSE GUEST EVER DID
Thanksgiving is on the horizon. Family, friends and strangers show up at your house and annoy you. Reddit asked, ” “What’s the weirdest thing a guest has done at your house?” Some of the responses:
– “They went through my garbage and then lectured me on it.”
– “Walked out into the living room at around 2 AM, and there was my friend’s girlfriend sitting on the carpet right in front of the TV with her foot in her mouth biting her toenails.”
– Childhood friend contacted me out of the blue and said she would be in the area and would love to see me. We took her out to a meal at a three star Michelin restaurant. She spent the night in our guest bedroom and left the next day. Went to clean the room, she had drawn a picture of her face and with a sharpie on the white lampshade next to her bed.”
– “My girlfriend’s friend’s visiting boyfriend moved a vase in our living room — which instantly improved the feng shui of our space. I was so impressed and joked that he could move stuff anytime. 3 a.m.,I wake up to go to the bathroom. All thelights are on, the entire living space is in disarray. He was rearranging our whole apartment.”
– “A special foreign guest with limited English at my parents’ for a formal dinner. They asked him if he would like to wash up before dinner. He looked puzzled, and soon we heard the shower running.”
– “I had someone dog sit for me and they completed a 1000 piece puzzle I was working on.”
– “One guest went into my backyard, went up to the plum tree and started picking several off the tree and just dropping them on the ground. When caught, he said that you need to pick every other one off so they can have room to grow”
– “Drank from kitchen faucet while on the counter in a cat costume. Lap, lap, lap…”

VOICE OF “YOU’VE GOT MAIL” HAS DIED
Elwood Edwards, the iconic voice of AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” audio message, has died after a long illness. Mr. Edwards died Tuesday, the day before his 75th birthday. Elwood was a longtime employee at Ohio TV station WKYC-TV working as a graphics and camera operator. His wife, Karen, worked at Quantum Computer Services, which eventually became AOL. In 1989, she overheard an engineer, future CEO of America Online Steve Case, discussing adding a voice to the upcoming software. She volunteered her husband, and Edwards recorded the phrases on a cassette deck in his living room — “Welcome,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “File’s Done,” and “Goodbye”. He was paid just $200.
* Well, $200 and a kiss from his wife, I bet.
* On June 23, 2015, AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications for $4.4 billion. Mr. Edwards, “You got screwed.”
* Always have a contract, and always demand a royalty per individual use in perpetuity. And none of that back-end Hollywood accounting jive. You want your points on gross, not net. The guy who voiced “The door is ajar” for cars is a billionaire now.

CYCLIST HIT BY AMBULANCE, THEN CHARGED $1800 FOR RIDE
Back in October of 2022, an Oregon man was riding his bicycle when an ambulance pulled up next to him, then made a sudden right turn into their fire station, knocking him over, breaking his nose, leaving him with scrapes and other injuries, and running over his bike. The ambulance crew scooped him up and drove him to the hospital. Then they billed him $1,800 for the ambulance ride. The cyclist, 71-year-old William Hoesch, is now suing the ambulance company for $997,000. That’s $47,000 to cover medical expenses – including the ambulance ride – along with another $50,000 for future medical costs, and an additional $900,000 for pain and suffering.
* I thought the $900,000 would have been for a new bike. Have you priced those things lately?
* I’d throw in another $100,000 just for general ass-hattery.
* Every business has to look for ways to drum up new customers, even ambulance companies.
40 LAB MONKEYS ESCAPE
Police in Yemassee, South Carolina, are searching for 40 escaped lab monkeys. The animals escaped Wednesday from Alpha Genesis, a not-evil-sounding-at-all bio-research company. The company works with monkeys to carry out clinical trials. It is not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases. Traps have been set up and officers are using thermal imaging cameras in an attempt to recapture the animals. Residents have been strongly advised to keep doors and windows secured. Anyone who finds a monkey should not interact with it but instead call 911.
* One or two monkeys is a freak occurence. Forty is a prison break.
* The monkeys were last spotted all heading to Washington, expecting to be sworn into Congress in January.
* So all of the sudden we’ve switched to a Planet of the Apes timeline? It’s gotta be better than the one we’ve been living in.

MAN DIES AFTER SITTING ON A BOX OF FIREWORKS
A 32-year-old man in India died after accepting a dare by his friends to sit on a box of lit fireworks. It happened last Thursday, October 31, during the celebration known as Diwali. He and his six friends had been drinking. His friends promised to buy him an autorickshaw if he sat on the fireworks box as it exploded. He sustained severe burn injuries to his buttocks, abdomen, and thighs before collapsing, and died two days later while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the city. Police arrested the six friends.
* In fact, India’s entire space program is under investigation as well.
* Sitting on a box of lit fireworks. I know how that feels. I’ve eaten curry before.
* And yet, it’s always so funny when Wile E. Coyote does this.
