PETA GOES AFTER PALACE GUARD HATS

Animal rights group PETA is now trying to get the ceremonial guards at Buckingham Palace to get rid of those tall, black furry hats. The hats are called ‘bearskins,’ because they are made of real bear fur. Each cap requires one bear pelt, and that bear is found in Canada. They cost more than 2,000 pounds each (US$2,600). PETA wants the guards to switch to fake fur. The military said it was open to exploring alternatives if the fake fur passes muster in durability, water protection and appearance. But “no alternative has met all those criteria to date,” a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

* Imagine standing around all day with a big, sweaty bear on your head. Like Howard Stern with an updo.
* “It’s time to attack the palace! Wait – look at the durable, water-resistant, good-looking hats on the guards! Retreat! Retreat!”
* I bet Disney would pay the royals a fortune if the guards wore Mickey Mouse ears.
