FAKE TOLL BOOTH RAKES IN MILLIONS
Some clever crooks in the town of Morbi, India, built a fake toll booth for drivers getting off a highway. They built the toll plaza on private land, and lured cars in by charging 50% less than the official toll booth up the road. The official-looking fake toll plaza, with multiple lanes, red & green lights, collection baskets and booths with live toll takers, ran for 18 months, unnoticed until officials saw a story in a local paper about the booth. Police arrested five people who operated the fake toll plaza. It was estimated they brought in $9 million over the course of 18 months.
* Yes, but it was all in quarters.
* Officials asked the fake toll booth operators: “Hey! Where do you get off???”
* One clue was when the annual revenue of the real toll booth up the road went from $6 million to seventeen bucks.
* This one is going into the Scam Hall of Fame, ahead of the Nigerian Prince and Bitcoin.
* Soon to be a major Bollywood musical.
