MISS UNIVERSE AND THE PLOT TO OVERTHROW THE NICARAGUAN GOVERNMENT

Nicaraguan police are looking to arrest the director of the Miss Nicaragua beauty pageant, accusing her of intentionally rigging contests so that anti-government beauty queens would win the pageants as part of a plot to overthrow the government. The plot started becoming apparent on Nov. 18, when Miss Nicaragua, Sheynnis Palacios, won the Miss Universe competition. Many Nicaraguans used the win as an opportunity to illegally celebrate in the streets. Social media sites celebrated Palacios’ win as a victory for the government opposition. It also emerged that Palacios had posted photos of herself on Facebook participating in mass anti-government protests in 2018. The government believes the pageant director, Karen Celebertti, rigged the contest so Palacios would win and encourage citizen unrest. Celebertti disappeared after the pageant; government officials want to arrest her and charge her with plotting to overthrow the government.
