WHAT ANCIENT ROME SMELLED LIKE

We now know what ancient Rome smelled like. In 2019, archaeologists uncovered a sealed vial during an excavation in a mausoleum unearthed during a construction project, near Seville in Spain, which at the time was a large city in the Roman Empire. It was a sealed vial of Roman perfume from around the era of Christ. They opened it and found the ointment inside was preserved and solidified. Analysis showed the substance to contain vegetable oil, possibly olive oil, and… patchouli. So, patchouli would have been permeating the air back in ancient times.
* So, the Roman Empire smelled like a head shop.
* Animal manure, human waste, rotting corpses, smoke, sweat… yeah, a little dab of patchouli will cover that right up.
* It was marked with a tag: “Deliver to the Emperor’s Vomitorium.”
* In another 2,000 years they’re going to mistakenly determine that our age smelled like Teen Spirit. (or Axe body spray)
