AUDIO: BIG WORDS MAKE YOU SOUND SMART
In a poll of more than 1,900 people, commissioned by Preply:
– 56 percent assume that someone with a complex vocabulary is very smart.
– 43 percent of respondents assume that people who use overly complex language are just trying to sound smarter than they really are.
– 58 percent of adults use words they don’t know the meaning of just to appear smarter.
– Here are the Top 20 Words People Use To Try and Sound Smarter: Articulate, Ambiguous, Aesthetic, Capitalize, Concur, Contemplate, Adequate, Coincide, Anomaly, Adept, Caveat, Brevity, Condone, Amicable, Bonafide, Charisma, Audacious, Candor, Impeccable.
* Well, who doesn’t concur with THAT?
* Look, there’s no shame in using the correct word when you’re trying to make a plethora.
* Speaking of using words you don’t understand, what the hell is “Preply” supposed to mean?
* It’s not that we don’t use big words on this show, it’s just that there’s not enough coffee in the building to get us to anything over three syllables.
