TOWN NAMED ASBESTOS WANTS TO CHANGE ITS NAME
A town in Quebec, Canada, called Asbestos is changing its name. The town was named for the material originally mined in the town but asbestos has since come to be associated with deadly cancers. But town officials have delayed a planned vote after negative public reaction to the four choices that were proposed:
– Phenix, the French version of the mythical fire bird Phoenix
– Apalone, a species of turtle
– Trois-Lacs, which means “Three Lakes” in English
– Jeffrey, the name of the man who operated the town’s first asbestos mine.
The city council is now looking into other potential names after many of the town’s 7,000 residents reacted negatively to the suggestions.
* Something tells me Jeffrey, who ran the asbestos mine, isn’t still around to fight for his name.
* I get every name but the turtle one. Maybe it’s a local joke.
* How about naming it Pink Panther, after the Fiberglas insulation that replaced asbestos?
* How about Trois-Pacs Un Jour, which translates to Three Packs A Day, which also causes cancer but sounds prettier.
