4-YEAR-OLD POET GETS PUBLISHING DEAL
A 4-year-old boy in the United Kingdom has become one of the youngest people ever to land a book deal – for his sensitive poetry. Nadim Shamma-Sourgen was discovered by the award-winning poet Kate Clanchy, who posted some of the boy’s poems on social media. Denise Johnstone-Burt, an executive with Walker Books publishing, says she was “astonished” by the “sensitive verse” written by someone so young. Now a book of his poems is slated for release next summer.
Here’s one of little Nadim’s poems:
“Everyone has to love someone / Flamingos love someone /
The wind loves someone / The sea loves someone /
Everyone has love / Even baddies.”
Here’s another:
“Take off our jackets / Hang them up.
Take our gloves off / Take our shoes off.
Put them where they’re supposed to go.
You take off your brave feeling / Because there’s nothing to be scared of in the house.
No dark caves no monsters / no witches no bees no howling sounds
You don’t need your brave anymore,
Wash your hands / Eat lunch / Go get cosy.”
* Kid needs to work on his rhymes.
* This 4-year-old boy, he’s got a mother, right? Let me guess… she helped a little bit?
* “Award-winning poet.” Be thankful you don’t have to listen to THAT acceptance speech.
* Thank heaven for social distancing so this kid won’t get beat up on the playground.
* Y’know, the world’s been getting crazy, and hard to deal with, and people are really on edge … but I think this little book of poetry just might turn everything around.
