13-YEAR-OLD RUNNING FOR MAYOR IN VERMONT
Ethan Sonneborn lives in Bristol, Vermont. He is 13 years old, he’s an eight grader, and he’s running for mayor. Like many young people, Ethan’s centerpiece issue is gun control. He says, “My generation has been taking an important step in this because we’re the ones were getting shot.” Ethan acknowledged gun control laws could be a tough sell amid New England’s hunting culture. “It’s a culture that I respect,” he told CNN. “But if it’s making the decision between letting my friends have a good time at a firing range and them possibly being involved in a school shooting, I’m choosing legislation to protect them from that school shooting.” Ethan faces two challengers for the Democratic nomination in the August primary. One of his biggest obstacles to running for mayor is that he’s dependent on other people for rides to statewide events he speaks at. Vermont currently has no age-based restrictions for gubernatorial candidates, but Secretary of State Jim Condos said they will likely be discussing establishing a minimum age in the next year.
* Especially if Ethan wins.
* Just another move by The Man to keep the young people out of the political establishment.
* He could be the first breakout candidate who actually breaks out.
* His other key issue is keeping your dog under control so it doesn’t chase your bicycle while delivering newspapers.
* Then he had to cut the interview short ’cause he was going to see “Ready Player One”.
