MAN WHO CREATED TOYS 'R' US DIES DAY OF BANKRUPTCY SALE
The founder of Toys ‘R’ Us, Charles Lazarus, died on Thursday – hours before his beloved toy chain was to begin going-out-of-business sales. Lazarus, 94, opened his first toy store in 1957 in Rockville, Maryland, near his home. By the 1980s he had created the supermarket of toys format and had grown the chain into the most powerful force in toy retailing in the world. Lazarus stepped down as chief executive in 1994 and as chairman in 1998 – ceding control to a new generation of executives, who managed to run it into the ground.
* Mr. Lazarus will be buried… in debt.
* Toys ‘R’ Us, Corpse Is I.
* Guess he was all played out.
* I don’t know. I get the feeling this Lazarus guy will be back.
