AUDIO: RAW WATER IS NEWEST FAD
The newest fad out of California: raw water. The term refers to unfiltered, untreated, unsterilized water collected from natural springs sitting right out there in nature and everything. By drinking raw water you will supposedly be avoiding the contaminants in municipal water, such as traces of unfilterable pharmaceuticals and lead from plumbing, as well as fluoride, which reduces tooth decay. Raw water, “they” say, is organically laden with minerals, bacteria, and other “natural” compounds – such as algae, e.coli, giardia and other natural pathogens. One of the proponents of raw water is Silicon Valley entrepreneur Doug Evans, the man who brought the world the Juicero machine, a $400 plastic motorized gadget designed to do one thing: squeeze a bag of liquidized fruits and vegetables into a cup. Not only did the Juicero cost $400, but each bag of juice cost $8 apiece. The Juicero went belly up last year when users figured out they could simply squeeze the juice bags by hand. Anyway, know that the man who brought you the Juicero is the same man promoting bottles of unpurified spring water.
* And may God have mercy on your colon.
* As anyone who’s just come back from a vacation in Mexico how they like raw water.
* Natural or not, I’m not comfortable with the word “pathogens”.
* I also don’t like it when the population in my glass of water is larger than the population of China.
* Next, Doug Evans will be trying to sell you “raw air”.
CLIP: Before you try raw water, you might want to hear this: “Bear Whiz Beer”, a classic commercial parody from Firesign Theater in the 1970’s.
