THE SIGN OF THE UPSIDE-DOWN PINEAPPLE

Here’s a weird thing that’s coming up on TikTok. People in vacation hotels and on cruise ships are posting pictures of an upside-down pineapple on their room doors and cabin doors to let fellow vacationers know they’re up for swinging. There are even upside-down pineapple welcome mats people place outside their rooms. The #UpsideDownPineapple hashtag has racked up 136 million views on TikTok. It’s unclear how the upside-down pineapple came to signify swinging. However, slang watchdogs say use of the symbol has been in use since the 1990s. So, if you see an upside-down pineapple on a cruise ship door it means that the people in the cabin are up for meeting other couples for “adult fun.”
* I imagine an eggplant on a playground swing could work, but maybe I’m overthinking it.
* Don’t forget to add the “No Monkeypox” symbol – a monkey in a red circle with a line through it.
* Hey, kids, wanna have some fun the next time your grandparents take you on a cruise? Plaster a picture of an upside-down pineapple on their door and watch the fireworks.
* They first tried using an upside-down banana, but no one could tell which end was up, so they went with the pineapple.
* I went on a cruise. I tried putting a pineapple on my door, and when I came back to the cabin somebody had replaced it with an ugli fruit.
