TEACHERS READ TRANSGENDER BOOK TO 5-YEAR-OLDS

This week’s Bad Teachers story: Officials at Mitchell Primary School in Kittery, Maine, are apologizing after teachers read a book about a transgender child to kindergartners. A school mother was angry she wasn’t given advanced warning that teachers were reading students the book “I am Jazz” by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings. The book details the struggles of a child “with a boy’s body and a girl’s brain,” who eventually finds a doctor that tells the family the boy is a transgender. School superintendent Allyn Hutton sort-of apologized for not alerting parents. “We have a practice of if a topic is considered sensitive, parents should be informed,” she said. “In this situation, that didn’t happen. The whole culture at Mitchell School is about teaching tolerance and respect. The people presenting the lesson thought (the book) was one more piece of teaching that lesson. In retrospect, we understand that toleration is tolerating people of all opinions,” Hutton said.
* “Even the stupid parents with the opinion that this was not appropriate subject matter for their 54kindergartners.”
* “Anyway, I’m about to take the entire summer off, so bite me.”
* Sorry, I don’t think topics like this should be explored till at least the first grade.
* On the bright side, this is good preparation for the Bruce Jenner reality show.
* This is just like my kindergarten class so many years ago: learning to sit in a semi-circle, practicing a fire drill, and hearing why Becky Keesling has boy parts.
* Five-year-olds are still trying to figure out Legos. Do they really need to know about transgenders?
* On the other hand, Legos are actually a transgender, with their combination of knobs and holes.
* Now half the class wants to go transgender to impress the teacher.
* “I am Jazz”? So not only are we canceling music education, we’re confusing the kids about what music they do know.
* Never name a transgender person Jazz, because, honestly, nobody likes jazz.
* So other than these 11 or 12 objections, it was a really good idea.
