PRESIDENT OBAMA PARDONS RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE
On Monday, President Barack Obama pardoned 78 people and shortened the sentences of 153 others convicted of federal crimes. It’s the highest number of individual clemencies in a single day by any president. Obama has been granting commutations at a rapid-fire pace in his final months in office, but he has focused primarily on shortening sentences rather than pardons. Pardons amount to forgiveness of a crime that removes restrictions on the right to vote and lessens the conviction stigma. Neil Eggleston, Obama’s White House counsel, says Obama has now pardoned a total of 148 people during his presidency and has shortened the sentences of 1,176 people, including 395 serving life sentences. Eggleston says the clemency actions exemplify Obama’s belief that America is a nation of second chances.
* But not you, Bill Cosby.
* A nation of second chances? That’s what Hillary thought.
* Meanwhile, O.J. Simpson keeps sending mental vibrations in the direction of Washington.
* Do you get the feeling President Trump will easily surpass this record?
* And that’s just by people in his administration in the first year.
* Wouldn’t it be classic if President Obama got really mad about the election and pardoned the real hardcore types?
* Imagine how that would look: “As President, I believe Charles Manson deserves a second chance.”
* “And for all you Beatles fans who didn’t vote Democratic, I’m pardoning Mark Chapman. So there.”
* Wait, after these last few jokes, maybe I need a pardon.
