MALL OF AMERICA TO BE CLOSED ON THANKSGIVING
Mall of America, the nation’s largest shopping mall anchored by Macy’s, H&M and others, has taken a stand against the growing trend of Thanksgiving shopping and will be closed on Thanksgiving Day this year. The mall, based in Bloomington, Minnesota, has been open on Thanksgiving since 2012. But mall officials now say they want to offer workers time with their families. The mall will re-open at 5 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Says Jill Renslow, the mall’s senior vice president of marketing, “We want to give this day back.”
* “Oh, and corporate doesn’t want to pay the holiday overtime anymore.”
* That’s right – make everyone stand outside all night long waiting for the doors to open. How thoughtful.
* Don’t these people realize how badly we want to get out of the house on Thanksgiving Day?
* You get to ditch the relatives for the whole day, then when you walk in the door at ten p.m. with more bags than you can carry, you’re a hero.
* Attention, Mall of America – that’s what we call a “Win-win.”
* I could be wrong but I think this is the first Christmas shopping story of the year.
* And make no mistake: Thanksgiving is now mainly the holiday that starts off Christmas shopping.
* The shopping angle has completely supplanted other Thanksgiving traditions like football and fighting with your family.
* In celestial terms, Christmas is a black hole that’s swallowing the star of Thanksgiving up.
* The Mall of America might want to give Thanksgiving back, but Christmas doesn’t.
