ESCAPEE TURNS HIMSELF IN AFTER 30 YEARS
An Australian man who escaped prison almost 30 years ago by using a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters has handed himself in to police. Darko Desic was 35 and had served about a year of his three-and-a-half year sentence when he allegedly escaped Grafton Jail on the north coast of New South Wales in the early hours of August 1, 1992. Efforts to find him were unsuccessful. Now, almost three decades later, the now 64-year-old handed himself over at the Dee Why Police Station on Sunday morning. It’s believed he had been living a quiet life on Sydney’s northern beaches for the last 29 years.
* Asked why he wanted to return to prison, Desic said, “The beach was getting too crowded.”
* I’m sure he took a look around at the state of the world today and thought, “I don’t feel safe out here.”
* Tired of doing his own laundry?
* His life would make a very exciting movie, in the beginning, then a very long, boring part in the middle, and then some more excitement at the end.
* Just curious – has Darko Desic seen “Donny Darko”?
