EARTHQUAKE SWARM ON US-MEXICO BORDER
A swarm of more than 250 small earthquakes have struck since New Year’s Eve near the California-Mexico border, getting attention from scientists. The strongest earthquake in the sequence was magnitude 3.9, striking directly underneath the town of Brawley, about 170 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The earthquakes struck in the southern end of the Brawley Seismic Zone, a seismically active region where tectonic plates are moving away from each other and the Earth’s crust is getting stretched out. The Brawley Seismic Zone is particularly important to watch because it is the region that connects the San Andreas and Imperial faults, both of which can produce damaging earthquakes.
* Happy Same Year, California!
* That was a great idea – building the town of Brawley right in the Brawley Seismic Zone.
* Those were either earthquakes, or the mole people have decided to come up through Brawley’s basements.
* 250 – is that a lot?
* Because, I mean, in Oklahoma where they have a lot of fracking, 250 earthquakes is what they call “a little something to stir the coffee.”
* If you don’t already know, “San Andreas” is a Spanish term meaning “we are so screwed.”
* This attention from the scientists – is it “raised eyebrow” type of attention or “crapping their pants” attention?
* I just hope Trump will help California after the Big One – even though they voted for Hillary.
* I could just picture Trump saying, “You want to give Hillary the popular vote? Fine – you’re on your own.”
* You know the weird thing? Before too long 2016 might seem like the good old days.
* Oh well, 250 little quakes is better than one giant quake I always say.
