COLD, LONELY BABY BISON EUTHANIZED
That Yellowstone National Park bison calf that was picked up last week by tourists who were concerned about its welfare and took it to a nearby park facility ended up being euthanized. A father and son – reportedly from another country – had picked up the bison, stuck it in the back of their Toyota Sequoia and drove it to a park ranger. They said the calf look cold and alone. Rangers returned the newborn calf to reunite it with its herd, but those efforts failed. The bison calf was later euthanized because it was abandoned and causing a dangerous situation by continually approaching people and cars along the roadway. A Yellowstone park official wrote in a news release: “In terms of human safety, this was a dangerous activity because adult animals are very protective of their young and will act aggressively to defend them. In addition, interference by people can cause mothers to reject their offspring.”
* Told you the baby bison was cold and lonely.
* On the bright side, the baby bisons are also very tender.
* Are the adults very protective, or do they ignore their offspring? Make up your mind.
* The park official was just trying to make it look like they did the right thing either way.
* Sure, they could have taken the bison further into the wilderness, but where are you going to find wilderness around Yellowstone Park?
* Are you telling me that Mom buffalo smelled human on a baby buffalo? No way. Have you ever smelled a buffalo?
* Mom was probably off having a soak in one of those Yellowstone hot springs.
* If it helps you get over it, think of all the millions of bison we’ve killed over the years.
* That probably wasn’t my best suggestion of the week, was it?
* But seriously, they used to dominate the Great Plains. Now we’re picking them up and throwing them in our trucks?
* What a waste. At least tell me this made a nice throw rug.
