Fox-TV has started heavily promoting a new fall series from Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy”. The show is called “The Orville”. It’s about an incompetent starship captain put in charge of a wacky alien crew and their hi-larious space… adven…tures….hey, wait, this sounds familiar. I know! It sounds EXACTLY LIKE STARSHIP WINKLER!!!
“Starship Winkler” is a 105-episode radio series we produced several years ago. You can find every episode in the WINKLER link at the top of the Prep page. There are also promos and work parts.
We’re not saying Seth MacFarlane ever heard an episode of our Starship Winkler and decided it would make a great TV show. We would never say that. But we will say that our little radio series is pretty damn funny and entertaining. Is the Winkler just another sci-fi parody? Some episodes are, but mostly (after the first 7 episodes) we make fun of pop culture, obnoxious celebrities and frustrations of everyday life. Plus, it’s an opportunity to show that you’re ahead of the TV curve.
We know that, with radio’s fear of running anything longer than 45 seconds that isn’t Imagine Dragons, a daily 75-second bit of entertainment might not be for your morning show. There are other ways: air it before 6AM, or during middays, or during afternoon drive. Tweet the episodes out, or post them on your web page. We don’t care. We produced the Winkler for you to give your audience something different. And we promise you this – after a couple of episodes – appearing at the same time or in the same place each day – listeners will be tuning in specifically to hear the next episode (which also makes it great for sponsorship! Give the Winkler to your sales department and see what they can do with it.)
If you start soon, you can easily get 40 or 50 episodes in before the fall TV season starts. And then people will think, “Hey – that Seth MacFarlane is ripping off (YOUR NAME HERE)!!!”
