UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR UNDER FIRE FOR BLACKFACE COSTUME
Nancy Shurtz is a law professor at the University of Oregon. For some reason, she decided to wear a blackface costume at a Halloween party. The 68-year-old professor hosted the party at her home, according to a separate university staffer. She said that her costume was based on the cover of a book, “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine,” a memoir by black doctor Damon Tweedy. In her apology, Shurtz explained that her daughter is a medical school student and didn’t have any black male students in her class. “She and others were outraged,” Shurtz said. Her daughter had a portion of Tweedy’s book assigned as reading. Shurtz said she thought she would “be able to teach with this costume, or at least tell an interesting story.” She says, “I am sorry if it did not come off well. I, of all people, would not want to offend.”
* It did not come off well? So she’s still wearing it?
* That’s a coincidence. I was going to go as the cover of the book “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflection on Race and Medicine”, but ended up just going as a pirate.
* You just know she thought, “Everybody’s looking at me because they recognize me as the cover of “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflection on Race and Medicine”.
* The worst part was when she started tap dancing and yelling “Mammy!”
* Come to think of it, she just should have told people she was supposed to be Al Jolson.
* I bet when she realized what she had done, Shurtz sharted her shorts.
* This is why the University of Oregon in considered a football school.
* Unfortunately, this year the football team sucks, too.
* She was able to teach with her costume all right. She gave a very convincing lesson on how to be a dumb ass.
* I mean there are mild surprises every day in the wacky news, but this made it to the “You’ve got to be kidding” category. Especially when it turns out she was the chair of the diversity committee.
* Gee, I guess she must have missed the 200 articles about offensive costumes this year.
