ROBOT GYNECOLOGIST
Ladies, would you trust a robot gynecologist? One will soon be treating patients in New York. Elmhurst Hospital in Queens has purchased one – to join their team of obstetricians and gynecologists. The robot, called the da Vinci robot, will be used to perform non-invasive procedures on women. These procedures cover all manner of female health concerns, including the removal of benign or cancerous tumors from the uterus. Procedures are done with the doctor out of the room. As the patient lies on the operating table, the robot carries out the procedure as the ob-gyn mans the controls, watching a high-definition 3D projection of the surgical site and using hand and foot controls to move the mechanical arms to perform the procedure. The benefits of the robot gynecologist: faster recovery times and less blood loss. Women who in the past would have been hospitalized for a week are now able to go home in a day.
* I’m picturing something like WALL-E, from the movie.
* How about the automated cesarean operation in “Prometheus”?
* How about making the robot talk like KITT from Knight Rider?
* A robot gynecologist. And thought your doctor’s hands were cold.
* I’m no scientist, but how is removing a tumor from the uterus non-invasive?
* Wow, and I thought the driverless cars sounded scary.
* Please don’t tell me a robot vasectomy surgeon is next.
* Do you get the feeling we’re in for a steady stream of stories where robots are doing new things?
* Hey, we’ve still got 12 days. Maybe we can build a robot president.
* Actually, we almost had one but Al Gore lost.
* I suppose this will get women used to the idea before the robot lovers get here.
