ZOO FEEDS KOALA TO A MOUNTAIN LION
A koala in the Los Angeles Zoo was mauled to death by a mountain lion. The suspect: the beloved Griffith Park wild mountain lion, named P-22 after his electronic tag. The koala caretakers were doing a head count last Thursday and discovered one was missing. As they searched the area, they found a tuft of hair and later the body of the koala about 400 yards away. John Lewis, director of the Los Angeles Zoo, said they have known for a month that mountain lion P-22 was getting into the zoo at night after looking at tracking data. They don’t know how he’s getting in or how he’s getting out. They believe he has been eating raccoons that get inside the zoo. Zoo workers were taking extra precautions after the incident, like locking up smaller animals in their barns at night. Despite the sad news of the koala’s death, Lewis said he doesn’t believe P-22 should be moved from his home in the wilderness of Griffith Park. “There’s a lot of native wildlife in this area. This is their home,” Lewis said. “So we’ll learn to adapt to P-22 just like he’s learned to adapt to us.”
* Just like the koala bear adapted to being eaten.
* Actually, koalas are pretty laid back, so maybe he was okay with it.
* The koalas could form a circle to fight off the mountain lion, but that would take about a week and a half.
* The mountain lion has been eating raccoons that get inside the zoo? Yeah – as appetizers.
* Man, this mountain lion must see the zoo as one big buffet. One big buffet with an international cuisine.
* I bet the kola bear was thinking, “I made it out of Australia, mate. Things should be nice and easy now.”
* I love the idea of a mountain lion looking in a cage and sizing up the menu: “Hmm, a zebra? Naa, maybe go for something a little lighter tonight.”
* “Besides, I had the zebra last week. I want to try something from Down Under.”
