TEXAS WOMAN SPEAKS WITH BRITISH ACCENT AFTER SURGERY
Lisa Alamia was born and raised in Texas, but now, after having jaw surgery, she speaks with a British accent. The mother of three began speaking differently six months ago after the surgery to correct an overbite. Alamia was diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that scientists estimate has impacted fewer than 100 people in 100 years. It usually results from stroke or a traumatic injury that damages the brain. Although she hopes her former Texas accent will return, Alamia is learning to manage her new one. “’Mum’ is probably the one word I notice right away,” Alamia says. “’Kitten’ (is another). They think I’m talking about a baby cat. I’m not. I’m saying, ‘I’m just kidding.’”
* Blimely, I’m gobsmacked.
* When she turned British, did her teeth get worse? How about her cooking?
* One change: she now goes “to hospital” instead of “to the hospital.”
* Plus the trunk of her car is now the boot.
* You know what would be funny? If Queen Elizabeth started speaking with a Texas accent.
* “Welcome to Buckingham Palace, y’all.”
