DAD PLACES AD LOOKING FOR WIFE FOR HIS SON
A Salt Lake City man said was shocked to see a full-page advertisement in an Idaho newspaper inviting women to interview to be his wife. Baron Brooks, 48, said that his father took out the $900 ad last Saturday in the Coeur d’Alene Press. Although he called the advertisement “embarrassing,” Brooks, the owner of two health food stores, says he will let his 78-year-old father go forward with the interviews. Brooks says his father recently vacationed in Coeur d’Alene and may have placed the ad because of the area’s conservative politics. He said his father has been ill and wants a grandson to carry on the family name. Brooks says he’d never buy an ad like this himself, but “it’s worth a shot. Can’t hurt.” The actual ad reads:
“My name is Baron Brooks. I am 48 years old, never been married and live in Salt Lake City. I am looking for a wife who is ready, willing and able to have children as soon as possible. I look just like my picture except now I have grey hair.”
* “Oh – and I’m not a real baron.”
* “But I could be your Prince Charming!”
* It’s Utah. He could end up with several wives from this.
* So, the only requirement is that the women be fertile? Could you be a little less specific?
* Wow, worst case of parents meddling ever?
* What do you say? “Thanks for asking permission first, Dad.”
* And now the guy doesn’t even get to do the interviews? His father handles that too?
* The old guy does know that arranged marriages are pretty much over in America, right?
* When do you draw the line? When the 78-year-old wants to go on the honeymoon?
* PHONE TOPIC: Did your parents ever set you up on a date? How did it work out?
