OREGON DEMOCRATS WANT TO TAX COFFEE
A Democrat-sponsored bill in Oregon that would tax coffee is meeting with resistance. The bill would impose an excise tax of 5 cents per pound on wholesale transactions of coffee beans and ground coffee in order to fund education programs. It’s estimated the bill would bring in about $2 million annually. Republicans are against the measure as poor public policy, and social media – from the region that made coffee drinking famous – has come out strongly against it.
