(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing, or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year.)
DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM DAY
The Time And Date Website says this:
“December 10 is Dewey Decimal System Day. The day commemorates the birth of Melville Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System of library classification. Dewey Decimal is one of the most popularly used library organization system in the world. The system, first published in 1876, organizes library materials by fields. There are 10 main fields that are further divided into smaller, more specialized area. Libraries around the world use the system to organize and classify their books.”
HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Human Rights Day, created by the United Nations, promotes awareness of the importance of Human Rights issues around the world. On this date in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Each year, the United Nations establishes a new theme for the year. Human rights is something we easily take for granted in the United States. Elsewhere, freedom and basic human rights are not a given. Participate in this day by learning more about human rights issues around the globe. Offer your time and money in support of a human rights issue that is important to you.”
INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RIGHTS DAY
The Uncaged website says this:
“The annual International Animal Rights Day (IARD) aims to remember the animal victims of human tyranny and call for the recognition of our Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR). The goal of this historic campaign is to build on the recognition of human rights, and persuade humanity that kindness and respect is due to all sentient creatures.”
NATIONAL LAGER DAY
The Punchbowl website says this:
“It’s National Lager Day! Lager is a type of German beer that is bottom fermented and lightly hopped. It is usually stored for at least three weeks after brewing before it is served. Lager is the dominant style of beer throughout the world, except in England where ale is the favorite style. The only real difference between ale and lager is that ales ferment and age quickly at warm temperatures, while lagers ferment and age slowly at cool temperatures. These different types of fermentation allow for a vast difference in flavor and aroma. To celebrate National Lager Day, head to your favorite pub and enjoy a refreshing brew of your favorite lager or try brewing your own!”
NOBEL PRIZE DAY
The National Day Calendar website says this:
“Nobel Prize Day is celebrated annually on December 10. At the age of 17, Swedish Alfred Nobel spoke five languages fluently. Nobel became an inventor and businessman, and at the time of his death on 10 December 1896, he had 355 patents worldwide – one of them was the patent on dynamite. Furthermore, he had started 87 companies all over the world. According to his will, Alfred Nobel’s enormous fortune was to be used to establish prizes to award those who had done their best to benefit mankind in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. In 1969, another prize was added – The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Laureates are announced at the beginning of October each year. A couple of months later, on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, they receive their prizes from the Swedish King – a Nobel diploma, a medal, and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize. All Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded in Oslo, Norway.”

AUDIO: LAW FIRM FIGURES HOMER SIMPSON HAS RACKED UP $143 MILLION IN MEDICAL FEES
A law firm has done the math and estimated that Homer Simpson would have payed out about $143 million in medical fees for injuries sustained over the course of the show’s 33-seasons-and-counting. Researchers for the injury attorneys at DTLA Law Group in Los Angeles analyzed 50 of the most well-known injuries to befall Homer over the past three decades, including multiple broken bones, head injuries, brain damage, animal attacks, radiation exposure and food poisoning. They said if this were an average medical bill, the total could equate to a staggering $143M over the course of the series.
* Wow, that’s a lot of d’oh! (see clip below)
* DTLA Law Group – you know their slogan: “We’re here for YOU – when we’re not screwing around watching the Simpsons all the time.”
* I don’t want to tell these lawyers their business, but have they never heard of Workers Comp or Homeowners Insurance?
* Coincidentally, 143 million is about what each of the principal cast members has earned over the past 33 years.
* The firm intends to spend the next six months figuring out all the personal injury lawsuits from those darn Jurassic Park dinosaurs.

U.S. NEWS
BEEF JERKY THIEVES
Amarillo, Texas police are looking for a pair of suspected beef jerky thieves. The two people are suspected of taking over $1,000 of beef jerky from various convenience stores in recent months. Police are offering a reward of up to $1,000 for anyone who submits a tip leading to an arrest.
* The suspect is slim and answers to the name of “Jim.”
* This will go down in the Amarillo crime annals right next to The Great Pork Rinds Heist of 2007.
* Seems to me a police dog could solve the case in about two minutes.
* Who steals $1,000 worth of beef jerky? That’s, like, 25 sticks. A lifetime supply.
* They need to stop them now before this escalates to them stealing those desiccated rotisserie hotdogs.
* This is a jerky crime in more ways than one.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
WOMAN, ANGRY AT HER BOSS, BLOWS UP OIL WAREHOUSE
A woman in Thailand blew up the oil warehouse where she worked because she was angry with her boss. 38-year-old Ann Sriya allegedly used a lighter to set fire to a piece of paper before throwing it on to a fuel container at the Prapakorn Oil warehouse. The fire quickly spread through the building, which was used to store thousands of liters of oil inside tanks. More than 40 fire engines spent four hours battling the blaze before it was eventually brought under control. The fire caused more than a million dollars worth of damage. She allegedly told police she did not expect the fire she started to cause this level of damage. (* Fire – how does it work?) She claims she started the fire in anger at her boss who had scolded her and discussed ways she could improve her work.
* Offhand, I can think of one really good way she can improve her work.
* She always did have a fiery personality.
* What a hothead!
* Too bad she didn’t work at, like, a stone quarry.
* Burning down a warehouse seems like a reasonable response to a job performance review.
* There goes that Christmas bonus, too, I bet.
* I would probably store oil in underground tanks, but that’s just me.
INDIAN MAN STARES AT SUN FOR AN HOUR WITHOUT BLINKING
An Indian man recently set a bizarre new national record after allegedly spending an entire hour staring directly at the sun without sunglasses and without blinking once. The 70-year-old Mr. M.S. Verma said he trained for this feat for 25 years, after being inspired by an Indian guru. After an hour of staring directly at the sun without sunglasses and without even blinking, Mr. Verma’s eyesight was deemed normal, as was his overall eye health.
* But he reduced a couple of bystanders to ash just by looking at them.
* Did we establish that it wasn’t a cloudy day?
* Here’s a retired man who could really use a new hobby.
* Isn’t this how Superman got his X-ray vision?
* The painful part was putting the SPF 75 sunscreen on his corneas.
* He stared at the sun after being inspired by an Indian guru? So he … saw the light?

JAKE OWEN’S BUSINESS VANDALIZED
Country star Jake Owen turned to social media Thursday for help finding the man who defaced his Good Company Entertainment headquarters Wednesday night. He’s offering a $5,000 reward. Owen said someone vandalized their building in the Charlotte Pike/46th Street area of Nashville “for no reason other than he’s a punk.” He writes, “I have all the video footage and even a silly little drawing on our wall that came from his small, little, non-creative peanut-sized brain.” Owen posted a photo of the guy he suspects is guilty and said he would “personally pay” the reward for information about the incident and for help identifying the man.
